Coach Laci Tompkins has high hopes for her basketball team at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma as the season opener nears.

“It’s a transition for all of us, so we’re learning each other, and we’re learning our system,” she said. “Right now, it will be us that holds ourselves back. I think the sky is the limit if we can work together.”

Led by Tompkins, the Drover women are headed to Bethany to take on their first two opponents in the Southern Nazarene University Classic. They face up against Dallas Christian University at 4 p.m. Friday and then play Ecclesia University the following day at noon.

A public forum on the status and progress of the teacher education program at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma is scheduled Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. The annual public hearing is scheduled in the Gary Hall Lounge at 17th and Alabama.

This public hearing is one of many to be held statewide, designed to give the public an opportunity to review and comment on changes being made in teacher education programs -- not only at USAO -- but at all teacher education colleges in Oklahoma.

"In compliance with House Bill 1549 and the Open Meetings Act, this annual event provides the interested public an opportunity to raise questions about new directions in teacher preparation," explained USAO President John Feaver.

Seven accomplished musicians with serious country music chops and dozens of albums between them have joined as The Former Texas Playboys. Together they will perform for charity here in the first-ever Black Tie & Boots Ball, staged by the USAO Foundation to raise money for scholarships at the University of Science and Arts.

Featured are country music legends Bobby Koefer, Louise Rowe, Chuck Hays and Joe Settlemires, along with Monte Gaylord, Wayne Gasson and Chad Maines, each with impressive album and performing credentials.

For the first time since 2006, the Drover men are ranked in the NAIA Top 25 for soccer.

Tuesday night, the University of Science and Arts team shut out Roger State University with a final score of 2-0. The national ranking — 21 — does not reflect Tuesday’s game, either.

Action Tuesday night for the men’s game started early with a goal by Dusan Rasovic and an assist by Niall Crick at 12:39.

The only other goal of the game was at 25:41 by Drover David Otieno. Gavin Otieno and Rasovic assisted in that goal. The Drovers did not allow any goals against them, making this the seventh shutout of the season.
