Drovers Take Two from Cameron

LAWTON – It wasn’t exactly the Valentine’s Day Massacre, but the University of Science and Arts showed little mercy as they swept Cameron in a Tuesday doubleheader by a combined score of 11-2.

The team won its first games of the season to improve to 2-1 after beating the Aggies 6-1 in Game One and 5-1 in Game Two.

USAO began the series like it was only batting practice scoring three runs on three hits and leaving two runners stranded in the top of the first inning. Bryan Jones, who led off the game with a walk, gave the Drovers a 1-0 lead when he scored on a sharply-hit, sacrifice fly by Kyle Bradburry.

Grady Wood crossed the plate for the first of his three scores on the day when Adam Crosbie singled during the next at bat, and Tanner Taliaferro smashed a double to left center driving in Kris Kolar for the final score of the inning.

Cameron looked to get things under control as they scored once in the second inning and collected five of the team’s six hits between the second and the fifth innings. USAO starting pitcher Justin Ferguson avoided big innings by stranding three CU runners in the fourth and fifth innings.

Kolar moved himself around the bases to score on a stolen base and two wild pitches in the fifth inning to give USAO a 4-1 lead. And Wood finished the scoring with a two-run homerun in the sixth. Ferguson got his first win of the season allowing six hits and striking out five batters.

In Game Two, USAO jumped out 2-0 lead when Jones and Wood scored in the third inning. Jones scored his second run of the series on a single by Kolar, and Wood crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

CU cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth, but the Drovers answered with three runs in the final two innings.

After reaching on a single, Taliaferro later scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning, and a Bradburry double down the left-field line scored Kolar and Cody Hines in the seventh inning.

Pat Bridges went the distance and picked up his first win in his first start of the year. He allowed only one earned run on seven hits while striking out six batters.

The Drovers are off until Tuesday when they travel to Moore to face Mid-America Christian University beginning at 1 p.m.
