Wyatt Gets Win Over No. 16 WBU

CHICKASHA – Senior Brian Wyatt pitched a three-hit masterpiece, and Cody Hines hit a two-run shot in the fourth to give the University of Science and Arts all the run support it needed as the Drovers downed No. 16 Wayland Baptist 4-1 in Game Two of Friday’s doubleheader at Bill Smith Ballpark.

USAO dropped Game One 1-4, but Wyatt countered in Game Two by holding WBU to its lowest hit total of the season. Twice this season, WBU only managed three hits, and the visitors were fortunate for that many hits Friday.

Wyatt had a perfect game going until the fourth inning when an error on an infield fly allowed WBU’s its first baserunner. Two batters later, Wyatt hit a batter and walked another but escaped with a fly ball to end the threat.

USAO’s offense answered WBU’s scoring threat with three runs on four hits in the fourth. Hines’ home run to left field scored Tony Bland, and Grady Wood singled in Bryan Jones to give the Drovers a 4-0 lead.

Wyatt pitched a perfect fifth inning, but WBU’s Chasen DeLeon bounced one just under Wyatt’s glove and into center field in the sixth to break up the no-hitter. One batter later, Sean Iverson bunted for WBU’s second hit, and an error on a double play ball scored WBU’s only run.

WBU managed a double in the seventh, but Wyatt got the final batter to ground out to end the game.

USAO improved to 16-21 on the season and will square off against WBU at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bill Smith Ballpark. The Drovers will play the home finale at 1 p.m. April 29 against Northwestern Oklahoma.
