Mallory Named Pitcher of the Week

SHAWNEE – Sunday, USAO’s Matt Mallory tossed a four-hit shutout including 13 strikeouts in an 11-0 win over Wayland Baptist. Monday, the senior from Grand Junction, Colo., was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Mallory had his best collegiate start against WBU setting career bests with four hits allowed, no runs allowed, one walk and 13 strikeouts for his third complete game of the season.

He only allowed one hit through the first five innings while striking out eight batters in the first three innings.

His 13 strikeouts is believed to be the school record for one game.

Just one day earlier, USAO sophomore and Fort Cobb native Nate Hammons posted 12 strikeouts in an 11-2 win over WBU. Saturday night Hammons held the USAO record most strikeouts in a game, but his record only held up for a few hours.

Last season, assistant coach Bryan Wyatt struck out 10 batters in a win over Iowa Wesleyan.

For the season, Mallory is 3-2 in five starts with a 3.92 ERA and a team-leading 45 strikeouts. Mallory and Hammons lead the Drovers (17-17-1 overall and 4-5 in the SAC) in a three-game series against No. 18 Lubbock Christian beginning 1 p.m. Thursday at Bill Smith Ballpark.

LCU enters with a record of 24-8 overall and tied for first place in the SAC at 9-0.
