Drovers Roll Bulldogs

WEATHERFORD – On the strength of a 10-run first inning, the University of Science and Arts drilled Southwestern Oklahoma 21-7 on the road Wednesday afternoon. Led by a 5-for-5 performance by Scott Ylda, USAO improved to 8-3-1 overall and improved its winning streak to four games.

Ylda was batting a measly .600 coming into the game, and the junior from Richardson, Texas, is now and astronomical 20-of-30 at the plate for the season and batting .667.

Sophomore Adam Crosbie drove in two runs in the first inning and finished the day 4-of-5 from the plate with three runs scored and four RBIs.

Bryan Jones’ first home run of the season was a three-run shot in the first inning. The Wichita Falls, Texas, native finished with 4 RBIs. Brandt Lierle improved on his season batting average of .391 by going 3-for-3 with two RBIs and four runs scored. The sophomore from Hydro is second on the team with 13 RBIs.

Brian Hunnicutt collected his first win of the season, and five other Drover pitchers combined for five shutout innings allowing only two hits and five strikeouts as USAO took a comfortable 21-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Saturday USAO gets another test as the Drovers travel to Texas Wesleyan for a doubleheader set to start at 1 p.m. TWU is 5-2-1 on the season and just had its four-game winning streak snapped at Oklahoma City with a 13-2 loss. TWU’s winning streak included a two-game sweep of Oklahoma Baptist, which received votes in the top-25 preseason poll.
