Drovers Almost End Nation’s Longest Win Streak

LUBBOCK, Texas – Ryan Birney hit two home runs, and Cody Hines and Joe Burnell hit home runs of their own as the University of Science and Arts almost ended the nation’s longest winning streak with an 11-8 game two loss to No. 1 Lubbock Christian Friday afternoon. LCU swept the series with a 26-2 win in game one Friday and a 12-1 win Saturday to continue the streak of 36 consecutive wins.

LCU’s come-from-behind win and series sweep improved its record to 43-1 overall and 27-0 in league play. USAO dropped to 20-22 overall and 12-15 in the league with only one series conference series remaining. It was USAO that stopped LCU’s 30-game winning streak last season with a 1-0 win at Bill Smith Ballpark.

The Drovers have already wrapped up a spot in the conference tournament, which begins March 29 at Wayland Baptist University. USAO travels to No. 18 Texas Wesleyan Tuesday and then ends the season with a home doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma (7-33, 4-23) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
