Drovers Take Three from MACU
OKLAHOMA CITY – With a three-game sweep of league newcomer Mid-America by a combined score of 35-6, the University of Science and Arts’ baseball team improved to 18-15 overall and 11-10 in the league. The six-game winning streak moves USAO into sixth place in the league standings with an important home series against Wayland Baptist April 11-12.
In Saturday’s doubleheader, the Drovers cruised 11-2 in game one and 12-2 in game two. USAO out-hit MACU 16-6 in game one and 18-7 in game two and also left 24 runners stranded for the day.
USAO pounded out 12 extra base hits as senior Brian Hunnicutt collected the win in game one, and freshman Caleb Martin collected the win in game two. Hunnicutt gave up only two earned runs off four hits through four innings. He struck out one and walked one.
Martin pitched six innings giving up only one earned run on four hits while striking out three batters.
Bryan Jones, Louie Romero, Scott Ylda, Cody Howard, Ryan Birney, Joel Atchley and Dalton House each collected two hits in game one. Birney, Atchley and Brandt Lierle each drove in two runs as USAO jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and held a 9-0 lead before MACU put up two runs in the fourth.
In game two, Birney and Lierle led the onslaught with nine combined RBIs. Birney went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and five RBIs while Lierle posted a career-high 4-for-4 day with four RBIs. Ylda and Howard each posted 2-for-3 days at the plate.
USAO scored two runs in the third and four in the sixth inning. MACU scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 6-1, but the Drovers pulled away with six runs in the seventh.
The Drovers will take two weeks off from conference play and travel to Cameron at 2 p.m. Tuesday and Hillsdale College at 1/3 p.m. Thursday. The team then travels to Kansas for doubleheaders against Kansas Wesleyan and Friends.
