Baseball Team Wins Fourth Straight
CHICKASHA – With a Monday sweep of Friends University, the University of Science and Arts baseball team won its fourth straight game and its 10th of the season. The 8-5 win in game one and the 10-3 win in game two improved the Drovers to 10-1 on the season as they begin conference play.
With a five-run third inning, USAO jumped out to a 5-1 lead in game one. Brad Sylvester hit a two-run single, and Luke Krobath and Joe Burnell also drove in runs to go along with two Friends errors.
With a 6-1 lead Friends rallied with four runs in the sixth inning, but two unearned runs in the fifth inning sealed the USAO win. Matt Sopic collected the win with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings pitched. Brandon Dean earned the save throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings allowing only two hits with two strikeouts in relief.
USAO jumped out to a quick lead in game two as Josh Moore got things started with a first-inning triple. A two-out double by Sylvester scored Daniel Wood, Greg Ylda and R.J. Nieto as USAO took a 3-0 lead. Jake Dunbar doubled in Shea Hall in the second to give USAO a 4-0 lead.
With a two-run double by Beau Bentley, USAO put up four more runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Derrick Wilkerson gave up only two earned runs on five hits in five innings with five strikeouts in his debut to help the Drovers to one of the best starts in school history.
The team begins Sooner Athletic Conference play at Rogers State at 2 p.m. Thursday, and then the Drovers host a Saturday doubleheader against RSU beginning at 1 p.m.
