COURSE GUIDELINES: Class Links
The following course guidelines pertain to all courses offered by Dr. Brenda Brown.
COURSE ACTIVITIES: Throughout the semester, we will be engaging in a variety of activities, including (but not limited to) class discussions, small group work, student presentations, and lectures. Your attendance and participation in each day’s work is not only expected--it is required. Missing class directly affects your daily grade which is approximately 10 to 15% of your final grade. Daily grades will be based on quizzes, group work, and other forms of class participation.
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is mandatory in this class. If two weeks of class are missed, you are in danger of failing this course. Daily grades missed because of an absence can not be made up.
TARDINESS: If you come into class late, after roll has been called, it is your responsibility to let me know you were in class. If you fail to do so on that day, the roll will continue to reflect your absence. Do not come to class if you are more than ten minutes late.
TARDINESS IS BOTH RUDE AND ARROGANT. AFTER 5 MINUTES OF CLASS TIME HAS ELAPSED, NO FURTHER HOMEWORK, QUIZZES, DRAFTS, ETC., WILL BE ACCEPTED. I STRONGLY URGE YOU NOT TO SIGN UP FOR AN EARLY CLASS IF YOU CAN NOT MAKE THAT COMMITMENT.
LATE PAPERS: No later papers are accepted. Do not simply leave your paper in my box as I will not grade it. Due dates are known well in advance so if you are going to be out of town, let me know ahead of time and we'll make the necessary arrangements.
PAPER FORMAT: All papers must be typed and should follow the editing and documentation procedure outlined in the MLA Handbook.
NONDISCRIMINATORY LANGUAGE: As intelligent and educated people, we demonstrate our awareness and disapproval of prejudicial behavior by refusing to stereotype any person according to his or her race, religion, sex, etc. This innate knowledge of equality should be demonstrated throughout your writing. Do not, for example, refer to all "homemakers" as "she" or all "lawyers" as "he". Current handbooks offer a variety of ways to circumvent sexist language, and you should take care to employ them.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: All papers should be your own original work. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.
GRAMMAR: Your very presence in this college class should verify your grammatical and mechanical skills. Always remember to edit and proofread your paper or test before submitting it. If you fail to do so, it is quite possible that your primary goal of communication will be jeopardized hence affecting your final product and therefore your grade.
