Speech-Language Pathology (B.S.)

This degree program is offered through the Division of Education and Speech Language Pathology and combines liberal arts learning with teacher preparation. The USAO Speech-Language Pathology Program is a standards-based program, based upon the standards and guidelines set forth by the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA)

Students who enter this program are required to maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Successful completion of the course work and practicum in speech-language pathology meets the requirements for admission to graduate school. A student must obtain a master's degree in speech-language pathology from an approved program. It is important to note that for professional certification as a speech-language pathologist a master's degree is necessary. All states that license these professionals require master's level training. In addition, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) requires both completion of a master's degree and a year of clinical internship (Clinical Fellowship Year) for the certificate of clinical competence (CCC) in Speech-Language Pathology.

Career opportunities for persons with a bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Pathology are comparable to those for students with undergraduate degrees in related fields, such as psychology, sociology, linguistics, or other liberal arts.

The following degree plan lists the course work required to obtain a degree in Speech Pathology. For more information on this program, e-mail Ms. Diane Holland, Director of the John Morris Speech and Hearing Clinic.
