ASSIGNMENTS

1.    There will be one lesson for each class session. Each student will be expected to read the next assignment for the coming session. The presentations will not be an exegesis of the readings, but an amplification of the material. Also, each student will post at least one question, or response to a question on the bulletin board (see How to Ask a Question). Since these questions will be the basis of the presentation and discussion they must be received on the bulletin board by noon of the day of the class.  One quarter of the student's grade will be based on the weekly questions and responses.

2.    An midterm in essay form will be given during classtime on Monday, October 25, 1999. This will to  taken in class and by e-mail. The test will be entirely essay and will be oriented more to the student's ability to think through the issues than on the recall of factual material. One quarter of the student's grade will be given to the midterm.

3.    A paper will be due on Monday, November 15, 1999. Each student will select an artist and, in a paper of about 2,000 words, explore that artist's theory of art as seen in the art done by the artist. This is less of a research paper in the "go to the library or the web and find facts" sense than it is evidence of the student's ability to apply ideas to concrete examples. One quarter of the student's grade will be given to the paper.

4.   The final exam will be given at class time on Monday, December 6, 1999. It will be in the same format as the midterm. The completed final will be submitted by noon on Friday, December 10. One quarter of the student's grade will be given to the final exam.
