Student Life

Much of campus life goes on outside the classroom. That’s not to say that USAO puts the classroom experience anywhere but first in importance. It simply means that the total university experience cannot be realized through academic involvement alone. If a university education can be seen as rehearsal for one’s future, then such rehearsal must include a large amount of experience with other human beings.

Start with Nash Library, the heart of research to every student, but also a great place to meet people, read the latest magazines, surf the Internet -- hang out. Computer labs in Austin Hall, Troutt Hall, and Gary Hall also are open to students, and a special Writing Center in Davis Hall (with tutors available) helps students with writing assignments.  Both Art and Music majors will find special computer labs with equipment geared towards their disciplines.  Mini-labs are also open designed specifically for various other major degree programs.

The University's strong student government organization invites and encourages every student to participate in virtually every area -- from dormitory life to faculty searches. Students are asked to regulate their own activities - to get involved - and, yes: that’s rehearsal for the complex working of society that every graduate will face.

Speaking of dormitory life, students find much more than inexpensive housing in the USAO dorms and, newly opened in Fall 2002, USAO's Lawson Court Apartments. There’s that wonderful variety of other students - the great melting pot of any campus - complete with the lifelong friendships that inevitably are made among people who are living the experience of education together.

What else? Intramural sports? USAO has them - in abundance. And dances and art festivals and concerts ... but read on.

Below and to the left are links to some of USAO's many opportunities for student involvement on campus. Take a look around, you'll like what you see!
