COURSE DESCRIPTION:
 Class instruction in voice designed for the beginning student. Group as well as individual instruction will be included.

TEXTBOOK:
 Schmidt, Jan. BASICS OF SINGING, 4th Edition, Schirmer Books.

STUDENT OUTCOMES:
 After successful completion of this course the student will have gained the following competencies:

 1. Improved vocal technique
 2. Knowledge of good vocal health
 3. A beginning knowledge of music reading
 4. How to practice singing
 5. The theatrical aspect of singing
 6. How to memorize and learn a song
 7. A working knowledge of a singer's beginning repertoire

EVALUATION:
All work will be graded on a point system with approximately 300 points for the semester distributed in the following way:

  2 tests - 100 points each
  2 songs sung from memory during class - 50 points each
  “pop quizzes” to be given periodically throughout the semester as determined by    your attendance and class discussion

ASSIGNMENTS:
 You will be assigned chapters to read from the required text book.  Please be prepared to discuss the material assigned.  Songs will be selected from the textbook or from outside sources with the approval of the instructor.

EXAM SCHEDULE:
 Midterm exam:           (written portion = 50; singing portion 50)
  First song performed from memory as part of midterm exam.
 Final exam: APRIL  M (written portion = 50, singing portion 50)

  Second song performed from memory as part of Final exam.

GRADING SCALE:
  90-100 = A
  80-89  = B
  70-79  = C
  60-69  = D
  59-00  = F
 

ATTENDANCE:
 Regular class attendance and punctuality are required.  Only TWO absences (excused or unexcused) during the semester; after which your grade will automatically be lowered with the following:
a.  3 absences -- 1 letter grade drop
b.  4 absences -- 2 letter grade drop
c.  5 absences -- 3 letter grade drop
d.  6 absences -- automatic F

MAKE-UP POLICY:
 Make up exams will only be given for excused absence such as serious illness requiring bed-rest and the attention of a physician, or a death in the family; a signed note form your medical physician is required.
 

1. Last day to enroll, drop/add  JAN. 15
2.  Last day to withdraw with an automatic W  Feb. 5
3.  Mid Sem. Exam:  February 23
4.  SPRING  Break   MARCH 15-19
5.  Last day to withdraw from a course   APRIL 9
6.  Final Exam     APRIL 22 @ 8:00-9:30 a.m.
7.  Commencement   APRIL 23, 8:00pm
