Last Second Shot Misses, Drovers Fall in First Round

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Drover basketball team fell 71-69 to Louisiana State-Shreveport in the first round of the NAIA national tournament March 19. Seniors Thomas Woods and DeAngelo Alexander led the team with 14 points a piece in their last action as Drovers.

The game was back in forth from the get go with the Drovers holding the largest lead at seven points in the first half. USAO jumped in front early by crashing the boards and getting second chance points. Junior guard Allen Harris added a free throw with a second left in the half to give the Drovers a 38-34 lead heading into the break.

USAO was unable to stop the Pilots driving to the basket most of the second half though. LSU forward Jamon Morris powered his way to 17 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Pilot attack.

The Drovers shot just 36 percent from the field in the second half compared to 47 percent in the first half.

Down 71-69 with 11 seconds left in the game, junior guard Tim Nelson was unable to draw iron on a 3-pointer that would have won the game for the Drovers. Nelson, who came into the tournament averaging a team-high 16.8 points, was held to only six points in the game on 2-of-12 shooting.

Sophomore guard Dexter Williams and junior center Jorge Parra added 10 points each in the game.

The Drovers finished the season 17-16 overall and made its first trip to the national tournament since 2003.
