Drovers Fall to Undefeated Bulldogs

WEATHERFORD – Despite a season-high 15 points from Dexter Williams, the University of Science and Arts couldn’t match the effort inside as undefeated and 10th-ranked Southwestern Oklahoma claimed its ninth straight win 80-64 inside Rankin Williams Fieldhouse Wednesday night.

Williams, a sophomore point guard from Chicago, Ill., hit 3-of-4 3-pointers and added six rebounds, three steals and a career-high seven assists. But SWOSU dominated in the paint outscoring USAO 38-19 and out-rebounding the Drovers 41-24. Led by Nate Perry’s 26 points on 12-of-16 shooting and 17 rebounds, SWOSU collected 16 offensive rebounds and converted on 21 second-chance points.

USAO took a quick 5-0 lead to start the game led by a 3-pointer from Tim Nelson, who finished with 12 points, but SWOSU rallied. The Drovers almost found themselves down by nine points at halftime, but a missed free throw with four seconds left turned into a Williams to Eli Flores layup as time expired. USAO trailed 34-30 at the half.

SWOSU scored five straight points to start the second half, and USAO never cut the lead to less than five points as the Drovers fell to 5-4 on the season heading in the holiday break.

The Drovers continue Sooner Athletic Conference play on Jan. 3 against Oklahoma City. The women begin at 6 p.m. inside the USAO Fieldhouse.
