Drovers Win Second
in a Row
SHAWNEE – Behind Avery Stevenson’s seven three-pointers the University of
Science and Arts crushed St. Gregory’s 80-66 on the road Thursday night.
Stevenson’s 23 points led an offensive onslaught in which the Drovers hit
55.6 percent from the floor and 44.8 percent from three to get back to
.500 for the first time since a win over Langston on Nov. 11.
After
upsetting then-No. 8 Oklahoma Christian on the road Saturday night, USAO
has improved to 8-8 overall and 4-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The
team can move up the conference standings quickly with games at No. 5
Oklahoma Baptist at 2 p.m. Saturday and at home against John Brown at 8
p.m. Thursday.
Against SGU, the Drovers had to look to a few familiar faces for offense.
In addition to Stevenson’s highest point production since scoring 21
points against Arkansas Baptist on Nov. 26, J.J. Walsh and Jose Nava
helped out with big nights as well. Walsh connected on 5-of-6 from the
field for 18 points while Nava scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds.
USAO
needed its early-season three-headed monster to pick up the slack since
Marcus Hines, the team’s leading scorer since becoming eligible at the
break, played only eight minutes.
SGU
was led by Patrick Jones, who scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
J.R. Rogers added 10 points and seven rebounds.
