Women Drop Second of the Year

OKLAHOMA CITY -- There were fireworks early and late in USAO’s doubleheader Tuesday at Oklahoma Christian. Both teams from the University of Science and Arts jumped out to halftime leads. The women saw their lead fade to a 2-1 defeat, while lightning strikes caused the men’s game to be suspended.

The men sprinted to a 3-2 halftime lead with two goals from Raphael Silvo and another from SAC and Region VI Player of the Week Adam Day. The score remained 3-2 in the 66th minute when the game was suspended.

USAO head coach Jimmy Hampton and OC coach Adam Basic have yet to reschedule the match. Each agreed that the non-conference game would restart at the point in which it was suspended.

The USAO women fell to 2-2-1 after giving up two second half goals. Tiffany Treadwell started the game’s scoring. Her third goal of the season, on Jessie Brown’s fourth assist of the year, gave the Drovers a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, OC’s Kristin Brown scored two goals to lead the Lady Eagles from behind. Brown’s first goal came on a penalty kick while the go-ahead goal came on a corner from Meagan Piess.

USAO’s Katy Swartzendruber, SAC and Region VI Player of the Week, stopped eight shots in a losing effort. The women look to rebound Friday in the team’s home opener against Eastern New Mexico. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m.

USAO Men Route Friends, Women Tie

WICHITA, Kan. – Sean Neal had a record setting day Saturday as he led the University of Science and Arts over Friends University 5-0. Neal’s performance helped the USAO men improve to 3-1 on the season while the women battled to a 0-0 tie in the second game.

Neal, a senior from Oklahoma City, tied a school record with three goals as the Drovers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half. Senior goalkeeper Elliott Ballmann earned his third win of the season as the team collected its second shutout of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Shane Flanagan played the second half for the USAO.

Adam Day, who had two goals and an assist in Tuesday’s win over McPherson College, came up big again with three assists.

The USAO women fell to 2-1-1 overall with the tie. Senior Katy Swartzendruber earned her second shutout of the season.

USAO will play its last road game before a five-game home stand Tuesday at Oklahoma Christian. The women start at 6 p.m. with the men following at 8 p.m.

USAO SOCCER REBOUNDS WITH SWEEP

McPHERSON, Kan. -- The University of Science and Arts’ soccer teams got back to their winning ways Tuesday night with a two-game sweep on the road of McPherson College. Both teams improved to 2-1 on the season. The women picked up a 7-0 win while the men won 3-1.

In the women’s game, USAO jumped on top with goals by Tiffany Treadwell, Stephanie Ginn and Jessie Brown in the first half. The team kept the pressure on in the second half getting off 21 shots on goals, scoring four. Ginn, Tara Wallace (twice) and Treadwell added goals before the final gun.

Goalkeeper Katy Swartzendruber stopped six shots to record her first shutout of the season and 15th of her career.

The men fell behind 1-0 in the first half, but Adam Day knocked in two second-half penalty kicks to pull out the 3-1 win. Jonathan Oman tied the game at 1-1 early in the second half, and Day gave the Drovers the go-ahead goal just two minutes later. Day’s last goal came in the final minute of the game.

The Drovers travel to Wichita, Kan., Saturday for an afternoon doubleheader against Friends University. The men begin at noon, and the women follow at 2 p.m.

Drovers lose at Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY - Both soccer teams from the University of Science and Arts suffered their first loss of the season on the road Thursday to the hands of Oklahoma City University. The USAO women dropped to 1-1 overall after a 1-0 loss, and the men fell to the same record after its 3-1 loss.

After a grueling 2-1 overtime win at Northwood (Texas) to start the season Tuesday, the USAO women managed only one shot on goal against OCU. Drover goalkeeper Katy Swartzendruber turned away 13 shots on the day, but OCU only needed one goal by Jessica Caudle at the 17-minute mark to claim the win.

In the men’s game, Adam Day caught the OCU goalkeeper out of position and scored his second goal of the young season in the 33rd minute to tie the score at 1-1. But the Stars answered with two goals in the next six minutes to salt away its first win of the year.

USAO plays its third of six road games to start the season Tuesday at McPherson, Kan., against McPherson College. The women start the doubleheader at 5 p.m. The men follow at 7 p.m.

Drovers sweep Northwood

 CEDAR HILL, Texas – The University of Science and Arts’ soccer teams got the season started on the right foot with two wins at Northwood University on Tuesday. The women claimed a 2-1 double overtime win while the men shutout the Knights 2-0.

 For the women, Talita Guindani scored her first goal as a Drover in the 94th minute to break the 1-1 tie. Guindani scored the game-winner on an assist from Jessie Brown in the second extra period. After falling behind 1-0 in the 65th minute, USAO’s Lindsey Merchant, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, scored on an assist from Moore’s Tara Wallace to tie the score and force overtime.

“This was a good win for us, especially considering being down on the road with a heat index near 110 degrees,” head coach Jimmy Hampton said.

For the men, two veterans posted goals while senior goalkeeper Elliott Ballmann earned his 16th career shutout. Junior Adam Day broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the 74th minute on an assist from Bello Illiassou, and Oklahoma City senior Sean Neal added an insurance goal in the final minutes on an assist from Day.

 “Their men’s team is very, very talented,” Hampton said of Northwood. “This was a really good win. Now, we have to heal up and get ready for another tough one at OCU.”

 Both teams, now 1-0 on the season, will travel to Oklahoma City University on Thursday. The women begin at 1 p.m., and the men follow at 3 p.m.
