The season opener for the University of Science and Arts’ women looked like a crushing setback by halftime. The Drovers found themselves down 3-0 at the break, but fueled by three assists from sophomore Alex Cernigliaro, USAO stormed back in the second half.
Senior Leigh Merchant scored the first USAO goal followed by goals by freshman Taylor Smithwick and senior Amanda Caldeira off assists from Cernigliaro. Freshman Brittany Jay scored the game winner eight minutes into overtime to seal the comeback and USAO’s first win.
The USAO men jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead and cruised to a 5-1 win to collect the team’s second win of the season. No stats were available at press time.
Both teams continue a six-game road trip with a Thursday doubleheader in Hillsboro, Kan., against Tabor College. The games are scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m.
