Funeral
for Janie Mary Callahan, 72, of Lawton, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20,
2004, at Barnett Chapel AME Church in Lawton with Michelle Moulden, pastor,
officiating.
Mrs. Callahan died Thursday, Oct. 14,
2004, after a lengthy illness.
Burial will be at Highland Cemetery under
direction of Jefferson Funeral Home. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8
p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
She was born Aug. 24, 1932, in Hammond,
La., to Curtis and Neary Williams. She graduated from Greenville High School,
Hammond, La., and Southern University, Baton Rouge, La. She moved to Lawton in
1956. She attended Oklahoma College for Women, Chickasha, and received her
masters degree in education from the University of Oklahoma in the mid-1960's.
She married Archie S. Callahan Sr. on July 5, 1954, in Hammond, La. They later
divorced. She was a member of Barnett Chapel AME Church, where she served on the
stewardess board, was a Sunday school superintendent, was a member of the layman
organization, the usher board, and a tutoring program at the church. She was
also Director of Christian Education at the church. In addition to being a
charter member of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., she was involved with the Center of
Creative Living and American Association of University Women. She taught in
Lawton public schools for over 30 years, including Dunbar Elementary, Howell
Elementary and Garfield Elementary.
Survivors include two daughters: Cheryl
Jones, Lawton; and Lynnette Callahan, Arlington, Texas; a brother, Curtis
Williams, Hammond, La.; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents;
two brothers: Joe Williams and Steve Williams; and a son, Archie Callahan Jr.
