Marie C. Guffy, age 95, passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012. She was born September 17, 1917 in Humphrey, Oklahoma to James F. Claiborne and Esther A. Pottorff Claiborne. Marie graduated from Humphrey High School in 1936. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Oklahoma College for Women, Chickasha, Oklahoma in 1940. She continued her education at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, where she received a Master's Degree in Education in 1953. Marie married Luther Kenneth Guffy on December 22, 1941 in Humphrey, Oklahoma. Marie taught school for 40 years in Oklahoma, Florida, Kiowa, Kansas, and Odessa, Texas. She was a life member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and a member of the San Angelo Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of San Angelo. After retirement she enjoyed managing her cotton farms in Oklahoma and was proud of the fact that the Claiborne Farm was recognized as an Oklahoma Centennial Farm. Marie was preceded in death by her husband Luther K. Guffy; her parents; three brothers, J.B. Claiborne, James Frank Claiborne, and George Rodney Claiborne; two sisters, Vesta Faye Burns and Edna Pearl Barefoot. She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie E. Bolt and husband Richard of San Antonio; one sister, Melba Dean Devore of Kingman, Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews, and family members. The Family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Baptist Retirement Center, the Baptist Hospice caregivers for their care and help, and friends who supported us during this time. The family will receive friends from 12:30 P.M. - 1:30 P.M., Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Johnson's Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 2:00 P.M., Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Johnson's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kevin McSpadden officiating. A reception will follow the service. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M., Friday, September 28, 2012 at Lowell-Tims Funeral Home in Altus, Oklahoma. The family will be present from 11:30 P.M. - 12:30 P.M., Saturday, September 29, 2012 with burial to follow at 1:00 P.M. at Altus Cemetery in Altus, Oklahoma. Memorials may be made to Baptist Hospice San Angelo, Meals for the Elderly in San Angelo, or a charity of your choice.
