MILLER, Jean

Monday, January 21, 2013

Jean Miller, of Conway Ark., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013.

She was born May 21, 1921 in Durant to Joseph J. and Geraldine Miller, and the family soon moved to Chickasha, where Jean's father taught mathematics at Oklahoma College for Women. Jean and her two older brothers, Donald B and John E. Miller, graduated from Chickasha High between 1931-1939. Jean loved Chickasha and returned there to live more than once during her lifetime.

The Miller's were very active in the war effort. Both boys were army officers serving overseas. Her father, a retired army officer, reenlisted and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston; her mother worked as a Gray Lady at the hospital. In San Antonio, Jean met a young soldier and fell in love. She always said one of the hardest things she ever had to do was to bring this young, non-commissioned Air Force officer in to meet her father.

On Aug. 12, 1942, Jean became a war bride, marrying Edward L. Gettinger. They had two children, Sarah and Donald. The family lived in Enid, Woodward and briefly in Laverne. In 1962, Jean and Getty were divorced, and Jean returned to Chickasha, where she worked for many years as a medical secretary at the Chickasha Clinic, and later at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Some years later Jean married an old friend from high school, Charles (Hap) Glidden and they spent their married life in California. Jean and Hap had a very active life together, traveling and playing tennis and golf. After Hap's death, Jean returned to Oklahoma and then Arkansas, where she enjoyed watching her son's children grow to maturity. Jean died peacefully in her sleep on Jan. 6, 2013.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Gettinger Schiller and Sarah's son, Kent Schiller and by her son, Don Gettinger, his wife, KC Larson and their two children Joseph and Maia Gettinger-Larson
