Regents accept clean audit, set calendars
A new student constitution and a clean external financial audit were approved in December when the University of Science and Arts Board of Regents met for the last time in 2012. Regents also approved an academic calendar for 2013-14 and their own schedule of meetings for 2013.
School officials were handed a clean audit by accountant Becky Fleming, CPA, of Norman in the Regents’ last meeting on Dec. 11. Her firm performed the annual external audit of the university for the one-year period ending June 30, 2011.
Under state law, colleges and universities are required to engage an independent, external auditor each year to study all financial transactions.
When she addressed the Board of Regents, Fleming praised USAO staff and management for “efficient and effective financial records management.”
A separate audit by another firm examines the records of the USAO Foundation, which manages scholarship funds and provides financial support for various academic and capital projects. That report will be released later in the new year.
Regents approved a new student constitution, which was presented by Dexter Nelson, a senior in history from Tuttle, who serves as Student Government Association president. One of the significant changes is to the name of the organization, from “Student Association” to “Student Government Association” (SGA). Another change is the separation of the SGA and Student Activities Board, which is more consistent with other universities.
“These changes will make our student government more efficient and streamlined,” Nelson said. “They reflect a comprehensive review of our constitution and a long-term, collaborative effort by student leaders.”
A schedule of meetings for the USAO Board of Regents for 2013 shows the board will meet at 1:30 p.m. on the following dates: Feb. 12, April 9, June 11, Sept. 10, Nov. 12, and Dec. 10. Under state law, those dates can be changed as needed, if USAO notifies the Secretary of State and the media, but a schedule must be published each year by Dec. 15.
Regents also approved a new academic calendar for 2013-14, also required by state policy. The summer term begins May 28 and ends Aug. 1. The fall term begins Sept. 3 and ends with commencement on Dec. 13. The spring 2014 term begins Jan. 10 and ends with commencement on April 25. Spring Break is scheduled March 17-21. The full academic calendar is available online at usao.edu under the tab “academics.”
