USAO’s Hypatia Society Inducts Fourteen Students
 

CHICKASHA – Fourteen students were inducted into the Hypatia Honor Society April 12 at the University of Science and Arts. Hypatia is the university’s only campus-wide honor society. Students cannot apply for membership; they are hand-selected for Hypatia by a faculty committee.

The Hypatia Honor Society was founded in 1923 to honor students for their high academic achievements, character, integrity and service to the university and community. Every student inducted into Hypatia is a multiple trimester member of the USAO Honor Roll and/or the Regents Honor Roll. The honor society was named after Hypatia, the famous Greek female mathematician.

Dr. John Feaver, president of USAO, and Dr. Linda Crumb, professor of business administration and past faculty sponsor of Hypatia, served as guest speakers during the luncheon.

Officers for the spring initiation were President Courtney Foley, Edmond chemistry senior; Vice President Benjamin Bauer, Oologah business senior; and Secretary Erika Cerda, Norman political science and theatre senior.

Hypatia’s faculty sponsors are Dr. Nancy Warden, professor of mathematics; Dr. Nancy Hector, assistant professor of education and coordinator of field-based experiences; Dr. C.M. Mather, professor of biology; Kent Lamar, professor of art; and Dr. Sanders Huguenin, vice president of academic affairs.

Following is a list of the students honored, along with a brief summary of their academic major and activities.

Blakely Adams is a Nowata senior with a major in psychology and a minor in liberal arts. Her USAO activities include the Psychology Club, the Psi Chi Honor Society and the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). She is a writer for the USAO student newspaper, The Trend.

Cara Boruty is a chemistry junior from Midwest City. She is member of the Em Hi sorority and currently serves as treasurer. Boruty is a tutor in the math and science lab on campus.

Staci Goode is a junior from Lawton working towards a deaf education degree with a minor in early childhood education. Goode is the treasurer for the American Sign Language Club and the secretary for the Students for Life Club. She also is a member of the Leadership Team for the USAO Baptist Collegiate Ministries and a member of Student National Education Association (SNEA).

James Hazelton is a triple-major junior from Sand Springs with physics as a major and mathematics and Spanish minors. He is currently serving as vice president of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. His other USAO activities include playing the euphonium in the Drover Spirit Wind Ensemble.

Trace Larman is a business administration senior from Tecumseh with an emphasis in accounting. Larman served a term as treasurer during his two years in Phi Lambda Chi. He is a member of the President’s Honor Roll.

Lindsey Monroe, a business administration senior from Chickasha, has been a two-year starter on the USAO Lady Drovers basketball team.

Kari Pippin is an early childhood education senior from Henryetta.

Sarah Powers is a Lawton junior with a major in English and a minor in history. She is a member of the President’s Leadership Class, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and Sigma Tau Delta (the English honor society). Powers is president of the Feminist Collective and also serves as a student senator representing the arts and humanities division.

Hether Ryans is a business administration senior from Ninnekah. She is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership. Ryans also is a member of the Ninnekah Community Alliance.

Kara Siemens is a deaf education senior from Claremore with an emphasis on elementary education. Siemens is a member of the USAO American Sign Language Club, Kappa Delta Pi and the National Scholars Honor Society. She serves the USAO community as a lifeguard at the pool and as a teaching assistant and tutor for the Foundations of Geometry and Measurement course.

Morgan Thompson is a communication senior from Anadarko and a captain of the USAO softball team. Morgan’s other USAO activities include writing for The Trend and working as an intern for the Sports Information department during the summer of 2006. Morgan was honored as a NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete.

Michael “Chris” Willard is a senior from Marlow with a major in communication and a liberal arts minor. Willard has served as editor-in-chief, entertainment editor and various other staff positions for The Trend. He also is a member of the Communication Club and the GSA.

Amy Williams is a deaf education senior from Chickasha specializing in mathematics. She is an active member of USAO’s chapter of SNEA.

Kati Wint is a junior from Kingfisher majoring in speech language pathology with a vocal music minor. Her USAO activities include the Drama Club, Student Activities Board and the African American Association. She has been involved in several drama department productions, including “Chamber Music,” “Pippin,” and “Some Americans Abroad.” Wint is the newly-elected president of the USAO Student Government Association.
