USAO Sets Fast Pace with 24-Hour Drama Feb. 24

CHICKASHA –  Is it possible to cast, costume and stage a play, all in one day? Students, faculty and staff at the University of Science and Arts will attempt the first-ever feat beginning Feb. 23. A public performance of the spontaneous show is open to the public Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. in the Davis Hall Little Theatre.

Sponsored by the 17th Street Players, USAO’s drama club, and Alpha Psi Omega, the production promises a fun, if not chaotic, evening.

“We will cast the show, memorize it, do lights, set, props and costumes, all in 24 hours,” said Kati Wint, speech language pathology junior from Kingfisher. “We hope everyone will come out to be in the show or to watch the fastest production any of us have ever done!”

Katie Simons, assistant professor of drama, said the production’s cast and crew are open to any USAO students, faculty or staff, and no prior experience is required.

“This is a play for anyone who’s ever wanted to be in a production but has missed their chance,” Simons said. “We think this will be loads of fun for people of all kinds and backgrounds to come together and create something new.”

USAO community members who are interested in participating in the show can register for the production by attending an informational meeting Feb. 21 at 5:15 p.m. in the Davis Hall Little Theatre.

Beginning on the evening of Feb. 23, cast and crew members will begin the daylong process of producing the comedy, “The Compleat Wks of Willm Shkspr (Abridged).” Throughout the night, the following morning and day, crew members will design and build the set, costumes and lighting while cast members work on lines, stage directions and cues from the directors.

Cast and crew members will need to bring a sleeping bag and overnight necessities to the 24-hour event. Food will be provided by the 17th Street Players, but members will not be allowed to leave the theater until after the play’s premiere on the 24th.

The final Feb. 24 presentation is open to the public at 8 p.m. in the Davis Hall Little Theatre. Tickets are $2 at the door.
