USAO Offers Summer Enrollment Day May 24
 

CHICKASHA – New and current students looking to grab extra credits over the summer have one last chance to enroll at the University of Science and Arts. This summer’s courses range from rock ‘n’ roll history to urban sociology, drama production and much more.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 24, USAO’s admissions counselors will receive enrollment applications in Troutt Hall 225 for the summer semester, which begins May 29. 

The summer catalog of courses offers a large selection of unique classes focused on a variety of interesting subjects, all of which earn students credit hours that can go towards an earlier graduation. Many classes offer evening hours for those with a 9-5 workload.

In “The History of Rock and Roll,” Dr. Dan Hanson, professor of music, takes students on a colorful journey through the history of rock music. From ragtime to big band to jazz to classic rock, heavy metal, rap, hip-hop and everything in between, Hanson will study the evolution of music and its impact on pop culture.

“This is about as unique as it gets,” said Hanson.

Dr. Stephen Kandeh, assistant professor of sociology, is offering a different approach to two classes traditionally left in the classroom. In “Urban Sociology,” students will utilize media and tours to examine the structures and social dynamics of urban life in America.

Kandeh’s “Law and Legal Systems” course features visits to live courtrooms where students will experience the court system in action. Visiting lawyers will give students opportunities to hear firsthand about practicing law.

For those on the dramatic side, Katie Davis, assistant professor of drama, will teach an evening course providing opportunities for set construction and costuming, as well as theatre management, sales and more. “Problems in Production” gives students hand-on experience helping produce this summer’s upcoming musical, “Honk! Jr,” in collaboration with the Chickasha Community Theatre.

“It’s ideal for a community member who has an interest in live theatre and wants some experience and training,” Davis said. “Never has college credit been so much fun!”

Team teachers Robert Edmondson and Dr. Erik Guzik, service learning coordinator and assistant professor of economics, respectively, are joining forces to explore creative thinking with a 5:30-7:30 p.m. course. In “Creative Problem Solving,” students will explore the nature of critical thought and creativity and apply their results to a pilot program designed for area middle school students. The online program could be integrated by fall, 2007.

USAO’s award-winning student newspaper, The Trend, is looking for summer publication writers. Dr. J.C. Casey, professor of communication and faculty advisor to the newspaper, is offering two classes for students looking to see their stories in print.
