Drovers Sweep ECU

CHICKASHA – Two completely different games ended with the same result – a win for the Drover softball team – as the University of Science and Arts handled East Central in the first home games of the season Wednesday afternoon at Bill Smith Ballpark.

The Drovers won Game One 4-3 before run-ruling the Lady Tigers 10-0 in Game Two.

After a two-week layoff, USAO struggled to make contact for six of the seven innings of Game One. The team scored three runs in the first inning on two hits but managed only one hit through the next five innings.

During that first inning, Dana Askins got USAO started on the right foot earning a walk and then turning a stolen base into the Drovers’ first run. She got a little help from ECU’s Stephanie Larriba’s errant pick-off attempt that slipped past the shortstop and centerfielder. Morgan Skelley and Amanda Cotton collected the two hits of the inning and scored on a ground out and wild pitch, respectively.

ECU battled back with one run in the second and two in the fourth to tie the score. In the sixth, Morgan Thompson broke a three-inning hitless streak with a double to left center. She then tried to score on an infield single by Jessica Darling and was almost caught in a rundown. An error on ECU’s Larriba allowed Thompson to escape the apparent out and score the go-ahead run.

Kindra Gregory collected her third win of the year by only allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out five batters.

Game Two was much more of a hitting fest, and Askins was dominating in her second win of the season. Helped by a four-run second inning, USAO cranked out 10 hits while Askins allowed only two hits in four innings of work.

Askins, Thompson, Darling, Gregory and Nikkie Aguilar scored two runs each as the Drovers’ cruised to the team’s third win in a row. Darling pitched a perfect fifth inning in relief.

USAO improved to 5-1 on the season, and the team will travel to Springfield, Mo., Friday and Saturday for Evangel University’s Early Bird Tournament. Evangel will be the Drovers’ first opponent at 1 p.m. Friday.
