Softball Takes Two in Tourney
TUCSON, Ariz. – The 18th–ranked USAO softball team won its
first two games in Arizona playing in the Tucson Invitational Monday
morning, and a Drover pitcher earned the team's first Player of the Week
award.
The Drovers started off the tournament with an 8-1 win over
Trinity Christian College, Ill., and then run-ruled Hastings College, Neb.,
10-1. The Drovers are on a three-game winning streak after beating No. 7 St.
Gregory’s at home Thursday in extra innings.
The Drovers will play Mid-America Nazarene, Kan., Huntington
University, Ind., and Manchester College, Ind., Tuesday before a Wednesday
morning showdown with California Baptist. CBU is currently the No. 1 team in
the country and eliminated the Drovers in last year’s national tournament.
Pitcher Marina Poddubskaya, a junior
from Tuchkovo, Russia, earned Sooner Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week
for her performances against SGU. She was 1-1 on the week with a 0.93 earned
run average and 17 strikeouts in 15 innings all against seventh-ranked SGU.
Poddubskaya set a new career high with nine strikeouts in
game one against the Lady Cavs and then followed that with eight strikeouts
in game two.
