Questions Answered

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. - The USAO softball team ripped off three straight wins Friday in the Gulf Coast Invitational making a huge statement to the rest of the country in one of the most prestigious invitational tournaments in the country.

After losing all but two players from last season’s national tournament team, USAO, preseason No. 18, had a lot of question marks coming into the season. Those questions may have been answered with Friday’s games.

USAO beat No. 19 Reinhardt University 4-3 in game one of pool play, and helped by a two-run homer in the seventh by freshman Michelle Bauer in game two, the Drovers beat defending national champion and host team Univ. of Mobile 4-2.

Mobile, ranked No. 2 in the country, had been a thorn in the Drovers’ side in recent years eliminating the 2005 team from the national tournament and beating USAO in semifinals of the NFCA Classic last season.

USAO finished pool play by beating Rogers State 2-1 and avenging season-opening losses to the Lady Hillcats with two starters not being able to play for the Drovers due to a class conflict.

USAO is one of four teams from the Sooner Athletic Conference to be invited to the tournament. Other SAC schools include Oklahoma City University, St. Gregory’s and Rogers State, which is in a one-year probationary period after joining the SAC.
