Drovers Drop Two at SGU

SHAWNEE – In match-up of conference titans and overpowering pitchers, No. 18 USAO dropped Thursday’s doubleheader at No. 7 St. Gregory’s 3-0 and 2-0. The Drovers won’t have to wait long to avenge their losses, though. The two teams meet again at Bill Smith Ballpark at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

USAO’s Marina Poddubskaya of Russia and SGU’s Sharon Bell of Australia gave up just eight hits and three earned runs in game one and just six hits and two earned runs in game two. The Drovers came out on the losing end giving up five runs over the two games, but Poddubskaya’s effort can’t be overlooked.

The junior gave up six hits and only one run through the first five innings of game one. SGU posted two runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the door on a USAO rally. In game two, Poddubskaya gave up just four hits and two earned runs in the third inning.

The run support just wasn’t there as Bell scattered USAO’s two hits in game two. Hillary Brown got a hit while hitting in he five hole, and Jennifer Bridgforth picked up the other hit from the nine hole. In game two, Kelsey MacInnes collected a base hit and Morgan Thompson collected her fifth extra-base hit of the season with a double.

USAO fell to 9-6 overall and 1-3 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO’s wins have included No. 2 Mobile and No. 19 Rhinehardt while its losses have come to No. 7 SGU and No. 9 Houston Baptist.
