Drovers Split with SNU

CHICKASHA – Freshman pitcher Michelle Bauer won the pitcher’s duel in the University of Science and Arts’ 2-1 win over Southern Nazarene in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader against Southern Nazarene.

Bauer gave up only five hits and one unearned run while striking out four batters as the Drovers rebounded from a 7-5 loss to SNU in game one. Bauer’s only run allowed came in the seventh inning as the Drovers protected its two-run lead.

SNU’s Andrea Frizell pitched a no-hitter through the final 2 2/3 innings as she relieved starter Kelly Moore, who gave up six hits and two earned runs.

Jennifer Bridgforth and Kelsey MacInnes each went 2-for-3 at the plate in game two with one RBI. Bridgforth drove in MacInnes in the second inning, and MacInnes drove in Bauer in the fourth.

In game one, USAO’s rally led by senior captain Morgan Thompson was turned away in the final innings. Thompson went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a two-run home run in the third inning to help the Drovers to a 4-3 lead after three innings.

Hillary Brown followed Thompson’s bomb with a two-run double that scored Sheena Rauniker and Leslie Beaty as USAO scored four runs in the third inning.

SNU came back, though, with a three-run fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead. A double to left center by Beaty scored Thompson in the fifth inning as USAO pulled to within a run, but Frizell homered in the sixth and didn’t give up another hit collecting the complete game win on the mound.

USAO improves to 4-3 overall after winning all three games at the Early Bird Classic in Springfield, Mo., over the weekend. The Drovers are 1-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference after the season’s home opener.

The team will travel to Orange Beach, Ala., over the weekend to participate in the prestigious Gulf Coast Invitational hosted by defending national champion University of Mobile.
