SHAWNEE – After the team’s impressive third-place performance in one of the
most prestigious softball tournaments of the year University of Science and
Arts’ Dana Askins earned the Sooner Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher
of the Week awards for March 6-12.
Askins, a senior from Moore, batted .350 with a home run and eight RBIs in
USAO's 4-1 week. Her two-out, walk-off grand slam earned the Drovers a 5-2
win over top-seeded Point Loma Nazarene in the National Fastpitch Coaches
Association Leadoff Classic on Saturday.
Askins, who was also named to the Leadoff Classic all-tournament team,
picked up pitching wins against No. 32 Tiffin, No. 9 William Woods and No. 7
Point Loma Nazarene with 21 strikeouts in 23 innings, allowing one earned
run.
The
Drovers improved to 16-4 overall after the weekend’s games. USAO’s run for
the Leadoff Classic title ended Saturday night with a 3-0 loss to No. 4
Mobile, Ala., in the semifinals. UM went on to beat No. 3 Oklahoma City 5-1
in the finals.
USAO
looks to continue its conference winning streak on Thursday when the team
travels to Shawnee to face No. 17 St. Gregory’s. SGU won the consolation
