Gregory Pitches Shutout, Drovers Win

DECATUR, Ala. – Senior pitcher Kindra Gregory pitched a four-hit shutout with nine strikeouts to lead the University of Science and Arts to a 3-0 win over Cornerstone, Mich., Saturday afternoon in Game Three of the 2006 NAIA National Softball Tournament in Decatur, Ala.

The Drovers’ hopes of qualifying for next week’s bracket play improved even before its noon game against CU began. California Baptist, the top seed in Pool B, lost to Lee University 6-1 in the 10 a.m. game.

With a head to head win over CBU at 5 p.m. tonight, USAO could sneak into tournament play.

Against Cornerstone, USAO jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first inning when Morgan Thompson doubled to right field scoring Nikki Aguilar, and Stephanie Hey singled in Amanda Cotton. Jessica Darling scored in the fourth inning off a CU error.

A one-run lead was all Gregory needed, though, as the Lexington native mowed down batter after batter. She never gave up more than one hit in any inning. From the second through the fourth inning, Gregory retired 9-of-10 batters – six by strikeout. She struck out 5-of-7 batters in the second and third innings on 24 total pitches.
