Drovers Fall to Late Rally

DECATUR, Ala. – Tiffin scored four runs in its final two at bats to rally past the University of Science and Arts 4-3 in Game Two of the 2006 NAIA National Softball Tournament Friday in Decatur, Ala.

After leaving three runners stranded in the top of the second inning, USAO scored the game’s first run when Nikki Aguilar scored on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Thompson in the third.

The Drovers took a 2-0 lead in the fifth when Hope Foley scored from third base on an infield hit by Courtney Foley, but the dreaded fifth inning would be the turning point for the second consecutive game.

In Game One, Lee University drove in two runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Staying with the ominous theme, Tiffin turned the tide scoring three, runs with two outs taking a 3-2 lead. Two of the three runs came off a weak flare to shallow right field that missed being a foul ball by just inches.

Hope Foley’s solo home run in the top of the sixth tied the score at 3-3, but Tiffin scored the eventual winning run in the bottom half on another flare to shallow right field.

USAO fell to 0-2 in the pool play despite leading both games into the late innings. The Drovers still have an outside shot of making tournament play which begins Monday. The team will need a sweep of Cornerstone and No. 2 California Baptist on Saturday and some help from some of the other teams in Pool B.
