Drovers Continue Win Streak

BETHANY – Two big innings powered the eighth-ranked University of Science and Arts to a sweep of Southern Nazarene in Wednesday’s doubleheader at Cypert Athletic Complex in Bethany.

Nikki Aguilar’s seventh-inning home run erased a one-run deficit in Game One lifting the Drovers to a 5-2 win. And a five-run third inning helped the team cruise to an 8-1 win in Game Two. The win marked USAO’s sixth win in a row as the team improved to 28-9 overall and 10-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

The stage is set for Thursday’s showdown with No. 3 and league-leading Oklahoma City at Hall of Fame Stadium beginning at 5 p.m.

Despite only giving up five hits and one earned run from senior pitcher Kindra Gregory, USAO found themselves down 2-1 in the final frame of Game One. Gregory got the rally started with a leadoff walk, and Jennifer Bridgeforth reached on a bunt.

Aguilar came up and pounded a three-run home run that gave USAO a 4-2 lead. Courtney Foley reached on a fielding error and eventually scored an insurance run on a groundout by Morgan Thompson.

The Drovers had a little more success early in Game Two. Gregory, again, kept the Crimson Storm at bay giving up only one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts.

Aguilar scored in the top of the first, and the onslaught began in the third when Thompson drove in Foley, Stephanie Hey drove in Amanda Cotton, Thompson and Hey scored on an error, and Bridgeforth drove in Gregory.

USAO’s lead grew to 7-0 after Jessica Darling’s RBI single in the fourth inning scored Thompson. Danielle Barrilleaux’s fourth-inning home run was the only blemish on Gregory’s Game Two performance, but Gregory made up for it in the seventh with an RBI single that scored Darling to finish the scoring.
