Softball Sweeps NWOSUALVA – Amanda Cotton and Hope Foley each swatted two-run home runs to help the eighth-ranked University of Science and Arts to 3-0 and 6-2 wins over Northwestern Oklahoma State in Tuesday afternoon’s doubleheader. Cotton and Foley gave USAO most of its pop from the plate. Cotton, a senior from Hudson, Texas, went 3-for-7 on the day with three runs scored and three RBIs. Foley, a junior from Mustang, added two runs scored and two RBIs. The two collected all of USAO’s RBIs in the two-game series. Game One swung in the Drovers’ favor in the top of the seventh inning when Cotton’s two-run homer broke a scoreless tie. Her shot over the left field wall scored herself and Foley, who pinch ran for Morgan Skelley. Skelley’s single to center field leading off the seventh was USAO’s first base hit since the first batter of the game. Nikki Aguilar doubled down the left field line during the next at bat. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundball by Jennifer Bridgeforth. Dana Askins finished her one-hit masterpiece in the bottom of the seventh retiring three straight batters and collected her ninth and 10th strikeouts of the day against NWOSU’s final two batters. She improved to 17-5 on the season. USAO started Game Two with two unearned runs in the first inning. Courtney Foley scored when a Morgan Thompson sacrifice bunt ended in a NWOSU throwing error. And Thompson scored one batter later when Cotton singled into right field. Hope Foley’s third-inning homer scored herself and Cotton and gave USAO a 4-0 lead. NWOSU scored one run in the bottom of the third and another in the sixth, but the Drovers answered in the seventh when Kindra Gregory doubled to right center scoring Jessica Darling and Cotton. Gregory improved to 8-3 on the season only giving up one earned run on six hits with five strikeouts. The Drovers collected its fourth win in a row as the team improved to 26-9 overall and 8-4 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO travels to Oklahoma City on Thursday to face No. 3 Oklahoma City (32-3, 6-0) beginning at 5 p.m. at Hall of Fame Stadium. ### |
