Seniors Go Out with a Bang

CHICKASHA – Senior Day went off without a hitch Thursday as the University of Science and Arts’ seven seniors said goodbye to the Bill Smith Ballpark crowd with a sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma, 2-0 and 10-0.

Dana Askins, a senior from Moore, collected the two-hit shutout win in Game One. She helped her own cause by scoring one of two runs in the fourth inning. Stephanie Hey, a senior from Oklahoma City, slid into home for the second score of the inning on a hit by fellow senior Jessica Darling.

Two runs were all Askins needed to collect the win as she no-hit NWOSU through the final three innings.

Game Two was a more appropriate sendoff for a group of seniors that helped eighth-ranked USAO to two national tournament appearances, a conference championship and a regional championship in four years.

Jennifer Bridgeforth hit a base-clearing triple to left center field in the third inning that scored seniors Kindra Gregory, Darling and Hey. The Drovers rolled up seven runs on seven hits in the third to blow open a one-run game.

Senior Nikki Aguilar drove in Darling and Hey in the fourth inning to cap the scoring.

Gregory pitched a five-hit shutout striking out five batters as USAO improved to 34-14 overall and 16-8 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

The Drovers are back in action on Friday and Saturday at Oklahoma City’s Hall of Fame Stadium for the Capital City Classic. On Friday USAO plays Central Methodist at noon on Field One, Evangel at 2 p.m. on Field One and Sterling at 6 p.m. on Field Two. Saturday the team will play William Woods at 4 p.m. on Field Four.
