Majoring in Speech-Language Pathology
The
Division of Education and Speech-Language
Pathology offers a bachelor of science degree with a major in speech- Attainment of the bachelor of science degree from USAO provides students with a broad base of knowledge and prepares them well for graduate school and future work in the profession. Career opportunities for persons with a bachelor's degree in Speech-Language Pathology are comparable to those for students with undergraduate degrees in related fields, such as psychology, sociology, linguistics, or liberal arts. Career Opportunities Speech-language pathologists work in public schools, hospitals, universities, private practices and rehabilitation centers. This is an exciting time to pursue a career in communication disorders because the field is enjoying unprecedented growth in career opportunities and in the scope of practice. The American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) says future career opportunities in the field of communication disorders are numerous. The demand for well educated speech-language pathologists is expected to exceed the supply for the foreseeable future. Curriculum The undergraduate program at USAO includes both academic and clinical work. It is this combination that prepares our students so well for graduate school. The curriculum consists of 44 hours of specialized speech-language pathology courses. Undergraduates are introduced to the clinical aspects of speech-language pathology through course work and clinical experiences at the John Morris Speech and Language Clinic and Jane Brooks School for the Deaf. Students in the speech-language pathology program are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average before beginning their practicum courses. Because of the trimester schedule at USAO, the undergraduate degree in speech-language pathology can be completed in three years, following the degree program provided by their academic advisor.
