John Morris Speech & Language Clinic During their senior year, students in the speech-language pathology program at USAO are required to work directly with clients with communication disorders, under the close supervision of ASHA-certified speech-language pathologists. Before the practicum courses can be taken, students must be a senior, have taken at least 20 hours of specialized course work, with no grade below a “C”, and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. John Morris Speech and Language Clinic is the university-affiliated clinic in which students work with clients during their practicum experiences. Facilities The John Morris Speech and Language Clinic has operated as a part of USAO since 1972. The clinic is named in honor of John Morris, founder of the Speech-Language Pathology Program. In 1995, the John Morris Speech and Language Clinic was moved to new facilities in Gary Hall, Suite 116. This beautiful facility includes office space for faculty and clinic supervisors, five therapy rooms with adjoining observation rooms, a waiting room for clients, a well-stocked material room, and a workroom/lounge for students. Services The John Morris Speech and Language Clinic provides therapy and evaluations for children from this geographic area with communication disorders. Comprehensive evaluations are completed to determine the needs of clients in the areas of articulation/phonological, fluency, language and voice problems. Individual plans of therapy are developed by student clinicians with their nationally-certified supervisors to meet the specific needs of each client. Children are usually scheduled for two to three half-hour or forty-five minute sessions per week. Parents work closely with their child’s student clinician by observing weekly sessions through one-way mirrors, carrying out practice at home, and offering feedback concerning their child’s progress. Contact Anyone interested in the speech-language pathology program at USAO, or in services from the John Morris Speech and Language Clinic, may contact Diane Holland, Clinic Director at (405) 574-1274 or by e-mail at dholland@usao.edu.
