What is the academic suspension and dismissal policy for students?
If I'm academically dismissed from USAO, under what conditions may I return?
Q: What is the enrollment process at USAO?
A: Students must first be admitted to the University. After admission, enrollment involves a few simple steps.
Students should go to the Office of Admissions for an enrollment form.
Then, students should see their assigned advisor. Every student who enrolls at USAO has one, and that faculty member is, in some ways, a friend for the duration of one's university career. It's up to that individual to guide a student through the enrollment process; to help with schedule changes, and make certain that each student is progressing at a systematic, self-paced rate toward the ultimate goal of graduation. And if other counsel is needed, the Director of Admissions is readily available in Troutt Hall for additional assistance.
Next, students should stop at Student Services for a copy of the Student Handbook and to obtain a student ID -- which is needed for all campus services: books in the library, food in the cafeteria, and admission to student activities.
Whether a student receives loans or grants -- or no financial assistance at all -- a stop in Financial Aid is required as the next stop in the process.
Then, enrollment forms are turned in to the Office of Admissions.
The Business Office provides an official class schedule and fees statement.
Q: How is class status (i.e. fr/so/jr/sr) determined at usao?
A: Freshman
-- 30 or fewer semester hours
Sophomore -- 31 - 60 semester hours
Junior -- 61 - 90 semester hours
Senior -- 91 or more semester hours
Q: What is the process of transferring credit hours at USAO?
A: To transfer to USAO from another Oklahoma State System Institution, a student must fulfill one of the the following criteria:
Originally (prior to beginning college anywhere) have met USAO's high school curricular and performance requirements and earned at least an overall retention/graduation GPA of 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) on all college course work elsewhere; or
Originally (prior to beginning college anywhere) have met USAO's high school curricular requirements but not the performance requirements and earned at least an overall retention/graduation GPA of 2.0 on at least 24 attempted trimester credit hours of regularly graded (A, B, C, D, E, F) college work; or
Originally (prior to beginning college anywhere have met USAO's performance requirements but not he curricular requirements, have earned (on high school course work) an overall GPA equal to a 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale), and have satisfactorily completed USAO's high school curricular requirements before transferring, or
Originally (prior to beginning college anywhere) have met neither USAO's curricular or performance requirements but have earned an overall
2.0
GPA on at least 24 attempted trimester credit hours of regularly-graded (A, B,
C, D, E, F) college work, and completed USAO's curricular requirements before
transferring.
Depending on the status of the individual student, other requirements may be pertinent. All transfer students should consult the Director of Admissions for information.
A: To change a major, students must:
Obtain a change-of-major form in the Admissions Office,
Obtain the student file folder from the former advisor and have the advisor sign the form,
Take the folder to the new advisor and have the new advisor sign the form, and
Return the form to the Admissions Office.
Q: How can I add/drop classes at USAO?
A: Pick up add/drop form from admissions office, have advisor sign it and return to admissions.
Q: What is the probation policy for students?
A: Any student who does not make satisfactory progress will be placed on academic probation for one trimester. To continue at the end of that trimester, the student must have:
Earned an overall GPA of 2.0 on regularly-graded course work (excluding activity or performance courses), or
Met the minimum cumulative GPA standard required below:
Credit Hours Attempted Cumulative GPA Requirements
0-30 credit hours 1.7
31 or more credit hours 2.0
Q: What is the academic suspension and dismissal policy for students?
A: Students who have earned fewer than 90 credit hours toward a degree and who fail to meet the criteria for removal from probation will be immediately suspended from the University. Unless an appeal is granted by the Academic Regulations Committee, such students will not be reinstated until one regular trimester (fall, spring, summer) has elapsed.
A one-time-only exemption may be offered to suspended students with 90 or more hours in a specified degree program. This exemption will allow the suspended senior to enroll in an additional 15 trimester hours in a further attempt to achieve the requirements for retention.
Q: If I'm academically dismissed from USAO, under what conditions may I return?
A: The process is as follows:
Appeals by Suspended Students: Students who wish to appeal their suspension must document any extraordinary personal circumstances that contributed to the academic deficiencies that led to the suspension. Such events must be highly unusual, such as the death of an immediate relative; a serious illness; severe financial distress; direct, significant work conflicts; unexpected, substantial family obligation; or personal crisis. Appeal decisions will be made by the Academic Regulations Committee. For further information about appeal procedures, students should see the Director of Admissions.
Readmission of Suspended Students:
Students who are academically suspended by USAO will not be allowed to reenter
for at least one regular trimester (fall or spring) except as noted above.
Suspended students can be readmitted only one time. Such students are
readmitted on probationary status and, while on probation, must maintain a 2.0
GPA each trimester or raise their cumulative GPA to a 2.0 GPA.
A reinstated student who is suspended a second time from USAO cannot return to
USAO until the cumulative GPA is raised to the retention standard or 2.0 by
attending another institution within the Oklahoma State System.
Reinstatement of Suspended Students at System Institutions: Research indicates that many times students suspended from one institution may succeed in a new academic environment if given the opportunity. Such students, therefore, may, at the discretion of the receiving institution, be admitted and such admission would be probationary. Institutions admitting such students should provide the appropriate academic services to facilitate their success.
