USAO Home

The English Program at USAO is designed to give students a broad base of knowledge in literature, composition, professional writing, creative writing, and foreign languages. Emphasis is always upon the power of words and their best use. English majors may choose from several minors and/or concentrations, and their experience is further augmented by the opportunity to learn special tutorial skills in the Writing Center, as well as participating in individually designed practicum. Graduates are well prepared for immediate careers in a variety of areas such as public school teaching, publishing and editing, and business writing. Those who elect to continue their studies in graduate school are especially well prepared to do so.

* Choose 2 British and 2 American for a total of 6 hours At least six of the remaining hours must be selected from Engl 4103, Engl 4203, Engl 4303, or Engl 4403.

I. Professional Writing Requirement
Required Courses (3 hours from either):

BADM 3223 Business Communications
COMM 2553 Journalistic Methods
COMM 4880 Technical Writing Special Topics or ENGL 4880 Technical Communication Special Topics ENGL 2403 Creative Writing or another appropriate writing course.

Foreign Language Requirement:
Two sequential elementary courses such as FREN 1104-1114 or SPAN 1104-1114. Students may substitute for this requirement up to two years of secondary foreign language study for which they earned a grade of B or A, with the approval of the division chairperson.

Recommended for Graduate School : four sequential courses in a foreign language.

Minor in English: 18 hours selected with the approval of the division chair.

Minor in Professional Writing: 18 hours, including BADM 3223, ENGL 2403, 3503, and 3403; a course in technical communication; and 3 hours of a writing elective approved by the advisor.

II. Teacher Certification

This program qualifies individuals to obtain an Oklahoma teaching license and teach language arts in grades K-12. Those individuals wishing to enroll in this program should consult the English education advisor or the director of teacher education.
