Chair, Dr. Jennifer Long IDS Faculty:
Dr. Ken Bohannon,Associate Professor of Music (B.A. Hendrix College; M.M. University of Tennessee; D.M. Indiana University)
Dr. Bohannon teaches Rhetoric and Artistic Expression courses. A baritone, he has sung in both professional and collegiate opera productions including performances with the Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Knoxville, Sarasota and Tulsa Opera companies. His courses in the Music department include private voice, class voice, diction for singers, opera theater, and voice pedagogy.
Dr. Brenda Gabioud Brown, Professor of English and Chair of the Division of Arts and Humanities (B.A. University of North Texas; M.A. University of Texas at Arlington; Ph.D. Texas Christian University)
Dr. Brown teaches Writing I and II, as well as American Civ I and II in the IDS core. Her doctoral work concentrated on the Modern and Postmodern American Novel and Rhetoric and Composition Theory. She is a regular contributor to USAO’s journal CrossTimbers. Recent publications include work on Sinclair Lewis’s Babbitt and Hannah W. Foster’s The Coquette. She has also contributed to the Encyclopedia of American Literature and the Encyclopedia of Rhetoric.

Dr. Susan Bussey, Assistant Professor of English (B.A. Austin College; M.A., Ph.D. Washington University)
Dr. Bussey has a special interest in the historical and cultural aspects of American Literature. Her graduate studies included specialization in African American Literature and American Culture Studies, and her current book project, The Racial Discovery Plot, is heavily informed by social and economic aspects of Progressive Era America. She has published and given papers on Pauline Hopkins, Mark Twain, and William Dean Howells, as well as on Service Learning in English. She teaches Writing I and II as well as American Civ I and II in the IDS Core.

Dr. Kevin Crow, Assistant Professor of History (B.A. Arkansas Tech University; M.A., Ph.D. University of Kentucky)
Dr. Crow teaches a wide variety of courses in the IDS core, from American Civ I to all three of the World Thought and Culture courses. He specializes in Greco-Roman history, religion and magic in Late Antiquity and mass culture in the modern world
Dr. Frank Dorman, Professor of Physics and Chair, Division of Science and Physical Education (B.S., M.S., Ph.D. University of Oklahoma)
Mr. Robert Edmondson , (B.A. Oklahoma City University; M.A. University of Texas; A.B.D. Michigan State University) Mr. Edmondson is the Service Learning Coordinator at USAO. He also teaches anthropology and sociology courses, in addition to World Thought and Culture I in the IDS core. His research interests include social movements, the nation-state, cultural geography and collective memory.
Dr. Erik Guzik, Assistant Professor of Economics (B.A., M.A., Ph.D. University of Massachusetts, Amherst)
Dr. Guzik regularly teaches Political and Economic Systems and Theories in the IDS core. His research concentrates on globalization and theories of the market, state and society. His doctoral research received the Galbraith Award for Outstanding Dissertation at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dr. Guzik has a special interest in creative problem solving methods, and teaches an IDS Special Topics course about creative and critical thought.
Dr. Dan Hanson, Professor of Music (B.M., M.M., Texas Tech University; D.M.A. North Texas State University)
Dr. Jan Hanson, Professor of Music (B.S. Texas Women’s University; M.M. Indiana University; D.M.A. North Texas State University)
Beginning her twentieth year of teaching at USAO, Dr. Hanson serves as the conductor of the Concert Choir in addition to her coursework in music history, literature and methods. She currently teaches Senior Seminar in the IDS core, and her courses are part of the Artistic Expression choices as well. Dr. Hanson serves as an adjudicator with the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, the American Choral Director’s Association and the Quartz Mountain Arts Institute. She has served as a guest conductor for the Oklahoma Choral Director’s Association and the Tri-State Music Festival and is board member for the Oklahoma Arts Institute. Dr. Hanson maintains professional memberships in the Oklahoma Music Educator’s Association, Music Educator’s National Conference, Oklahoma Choral Director’s Association and the American Choral Director’s Association.
Dr. Lee Hester, Associate Professor of American Indian Studies (B.A., M.A., Ph.D. University of Oklahoma)
Dr. Hester is the Director of the USAO American Indian Studies program and Director of the Pan-American Indian Humanities Center. A philosophy Ph.D., he teaches Rhetoric in the IDS core. His areas of research include logic, epistemology, Indian law and policy, and Native American philosophy. Dr. Hester is a widely published author in books and journals such as the Encyclopedia of North American Indians, Philosophy of Law: An Encyclopedia, Ayaangwaamizin: The International Journal of Indigenous Philosophy, and Environmental Ethics. His book Political Principles and Indian Sovereignty was awarded the Wordcraft Circle’s Writer of the Year Award in 2002. He serves on the Board of Directors of the OK Choctaw Tribal Alliance, is a founding member of the Oklahoma Association for Healthcare Ethics, and is co-founder and editor of Ayaangwaamizin: The International Journal of Indigenous Philosophy. Dr. Hester is also a member of the American Philosophical Association and the American Indian Philosophical Association

Dr. Stephen Kandeh, Assistant Professor of Sociology (B.A., M.S. University of Sierra Leone; Ph.D. Ohio State University) Dr. Kandeh regularly teaches the Individual in Contemporary Society course. His field of specialization is natural and human resources sociology, and researches issues concerning human development, poverty, and community development.

Dr. Jennifer Long, Associate Professor of Economics and Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies (B.A. University of Tulsa; Ph.D. University of Tennessee)
In conjunction with her role as Chair of the IDS program, Dr. Long teaches several IDS courses, including Individual in Contemporary Society, American Civ I, American Civ II, PEST and Honors Senior Seminar. An economic historian, her primary research focus is women’s labor history. She has also published or presented on a wide variety of topics, including the history of New Deal job creation in Tennessee, feminist participatory research methods, NAFTA-related job loss in the South, and the dangers of right-to-work laws. Dr. Long is a member of the Association for Institutionalist Thought, the International Association for Feminist Economics and the Association for Evolutionary Economics and also serves on the board of the Women’s Service and Family Resource Center in Chickasha.

A 19th Century American specialist, Dr. Miller teaches both American Civ I and II. His research focuses on early 19th century newspapers, and his 538-page Indiana Newspaper Bibliography remains the standard research guide on the history and availability of six thousand Indiana newspapers published between 1804 and 1980.

Dr. Christopher Walker, Assistant Professor of Psychology (B.A. Oklahoma Baptist University; M.Ed., Ph.D. University of Oklahoma) Dr. Walker regularly teaches the Individual in Contemporary Society course. He is a specialist in the area of educational psychology, concentrating on academic motivation, classroom engagement and achievement. Other research areas include political psychology, especially attitudes toward voting, politics and civil liberties. Dr. Walker is a past recipient of USAO’s Regents Award for Superior Teaching, and is a member of the American Educational Research Association, the American Psychological Association, and the Oklahoma Psychological Society.

Dr. Nancy Warden, Professor of Mathematics (B.S. East Central University; M.A., Ph.D. University of Oklahoma)
Dr. Stephen Weber, Associate Professor of Music (B.A. Concordia University; M.A. Trenton State College; Ph.D. Texas Tech University) Dr. Weber is an award-winning composer for voice, piano, organ, choir, woodwinds, brass and percussion. He has over 80 published compositions to his credit and has been the recipient of 12 consecutive annual awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). Dr. Weber not only teaches courses for the IDS Artistic Expression requirement, but brings his fine arts perspective into World Thought courses as well, and is currently teaching a Senior Seminar. He is a piano soloist and accompanist, specializing in the works of Romantic composers, Chopin in particular, and 20th Century music. His research interests include aesthetics, body-mind integration, performance anxiety, and interdisciplinary arts studies.
