Men Get 1st Win; Women Suffer Loss
SHAWNEE – As with the two previous times this season,
the USAO soccer teams split a doubleheader. This time, the Drover
men walked away with a 2-0 win, while the women suffered their first
loss of the season, 1-0, at St. Gregory’s.
The men’s two-goal win improves their record to 1-2
overall. The women fall to 2-1-1 on the young season. This week, the
USAO men face Missouri Baptist at 5 p.m. Friday at the Edmond Soccer
Complex, located about a quarter-mile west of Kelley on Danforth. On
Sept. 14, the Drovers host Bacone College in a 2 p.m. non-conference
doubleheader.
In the men’s game, sophomore Tom Hubbard got the Drovers
on the board with a goal in the 2nd minute of play.
Freshman Jonathan Oman won a ball at midfield and sent a crisp pass
to the left side where Hubbard blew it past St. Gregory goalkeeper
Robert McKnight. It was the Drovers’ first goal of the season.
About midway through the second half, junior Nate Phillips
added an insurance goal in the 68th minute. Once again,
Oman got things started at midfield with a cross pass to sophomore
Adam Day, who found Phillips heading toward the goal.
Junior goalkeeper Elliott Ballmann collected two saves on
only two shots, while McKnight kept busy with seven saves on nine
shots. Six players, including four Drovers, picked up yellow cards
in the physical contest, in which 59 total fouls were called.
Hubbard, sophomore Eric Ramos, sophomore Keith Ooten and senior
Jason Wilson were issued yellow cards.
The St. Gregory’s women broke a scoreless tie with a
goal by Amy Rogers in the 60th minute. After collecting a
pass just over midfield, Rogers beat the left defender and chipped
it past the goalkeeper.
The Drovers weren’t able to get on the board, despite
six shots. Junior goalkeeper Katy Newville stopped eight of nine
shots against the Lady Cavaliers, while SGU’s Nicole McAuley
snared all six shots she faced.
