Soccer Teams Sweep
Bacone College
For the first time this season, the USAO soccer teams have
posted a sweep in a doubleheader. On Tuesday, the Drover women blew past
Bacone College 4-1, while the men shut out the Warriors, 4-0.
With their three-goal win, the USAO women improve
their record to 3-1-1 overall. The Drover men upgrade their record to
2-2-1 overall. On Saturday, the Drovers host Friends, Kan., in a
doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. USAO travels to Lindsborg, Kan., on Sept.
21 to take on Bethany College.
In the women’s game Tuesday, USAO scored two goals
in the first half – just three minutes a part – and added two more in
the second to claim the 4-1 win. Senior Laura Parker got things started
with a goal on a direct free kick in the 27th minute. Junior
Tiffany Treadwell connected on a shot from 18 yards out in the 30th
minute.
Bacone cut the USAO lead to one in the 57th
minute on a goal by Jennifer Sheetz. But, sophomore Hayley Critchfield put
the Drovers up for good in the 64th minute off a cross pass
from freshman Lindsey Merchant. In the 81st minute, Merchant
scored when she rebounded a shot by junior Stephanie Ginn.
Junior goalkeeper Katy Newville stopped three of four
shots, all in the second half, and allowed one goal. Bacone goalkeeper
Melissa Ward collected 10 saves, including seven in the first half, and
allowed four goals in the loss.
The USAO offense was on display in the men’s game,
as the Drovers scored three times in less than 10 minutes for an easy 4-0
win. Senior Marcus Williams beat his defender down the left side and
scored just before halftime. Sophomore Freddy Oballa connected on his
first of two goals in the 46th minute off a deflection in front
of the goal.
Oballa found the back of the net again in the 50th
minute, this time off a cross pass from sophomore Adam Day. In the 79th
minute, Day scored on a penalty kick after Bacone committed a handball in
the goalkeeper box.
Junior goalkeeper Elliott Ballmann finished with
three saves for his second shutout of the season and set a school record
with eight career shutouts. Bacone’s Mario Lugo corralled nine of 13
shots in the loss.
