Soccer Teams Sweep Bethany, Kan.
LINDSBORG, Kan. – With both teams on multi-game winning
streaks, the USAO soccer teams added one more as they swept a
doubleheader Tuesday at Bethany College. The women won 4-1, and the
men followed with a 3-1 victory.
With their three-goal win, the Drover women improved to
5-1-1 on the season, and are riding a three-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, the USAO men moved up to 4-2-1 overall, and are also
enjoying a three-game winning streak. This weekend, the Drovers host
doubleheaders with College of the Southwest at 2 p.m. on Friday and
Texas Wesleyan at 3 p.m. Saturday in the USAO Soccer Classic
tournament.
In the women’s game, USAO scored twice in the first half
and added two in the second for the 4-1 win. Senior Laura Parker got
things going with her third goal of the season about midway through
the first half, thanks to an assist from junior Samantha Pecore.
Junior Stephanie Ginn scored the Drovers’ other first half goal in
about the 40th minute on a pass from Parker.
Senior Stefanie Tyree added another goal in the opening
minutes of the second half, on an assist by Ginn, for a commanding
3-0 lead. Bethany came back with a goal on a penalty kick, after
Pecore was whistled for a yellow card in the goalkeeper’s box.
Pecore got revenge later in the half with a goal on a pass from Ginn.
Junior goalkeeper Katy Newville finished with four saves,
and allowed just her fifth goal of the season. Bethany’s Ashley
Holland corralled four saves, but gave up three goals.
In the men’s game, USAO scored two goals in the
first half, and followed with an insurance goal in the second for a
3-1 win. Senior Nene Coulibally, who missed much of the first half
of the season with a hamstring injury, scored early in the game on a
pass from sophomore Adam Day.
Senior Joe Uhl scored his first goal of the season about
midway through the first half on a cross pass from Coulibally.
Bethany’s Robert Paine cut the Drovers’ lead with a goal just
before halftime. Coulibally put the game away late in the second
half by netting his third goal of the season on another pass from
Day.
Junior
goalkeeper Elliott Ballmann collected eight saves and gave up a goal
in the two-goal win. Bethany’s Brett Meachum finished with four
saves, but allowed three goals.
