Soccer Women Fall to Northwestern, 2-0
ALVA – As the saying goes, “all good things
must come to an end.” That was the sentiment of the USAO women’s
soccer team as it lost 2-0 Tuesday night at Northwestern OSU, ending a
five-game winning streak.
With the loss, the Drovers drop to 7-2-1 overall
and 0-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO finishes the week on the
road, with doubleheaders against Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee on Thursday
and against Texas A&M-International in Dallas on Friday. Thursday’s
matches start at 1 p.m., and Friday’s kick off at 5 p.m.
On Tuesday night, the Rangers (9-1-1, 3-0-0) got off to a
good start as they scored both goals within the first 26 minutes of the
game.
Sherina
Wood got things started for Northwestern in the 11th minute
with a header off a corner kick by Christy Welker. Northwestern’s second
goal, in the 26th minute, was a Jenessa Hunter one-on-one with
USAO goalkeeper Katy Newville.
The game was quite physical with 22 total fouls handed
out. USAO was whistled for nine fouls, while Northwestern was responsible
for 13.
Newville, a junior, collected seven saves but allowed two
goals in just her second loss of the season. Northwestern’s Delydia Gay
also finished with seven saves as she collected her fifth shutout of the
