Soccer Teams Lose To Texas A&M-International
DALLAS – For the first time in more than a month, the
USAO soccer teams lost a doubleheader. Last Friday, the Drover men lost
4-1 to Texas A&M-International, while the women suffered a 4-3
setback.
With their three-goal loss, the USAO men fall to 8-4-1
overall. The Drover women drop back to 7-3-2. On Tuesday, the Drovers
continue conference play with a 6 p.m. doubleheader at Oklahoma Christian.
They finish the week by hosting John Brown, Ark., in a 1 p.m. doubleheader
at Drover Field.
In the women’s match, USAO scored three straight goals
in the second half to recover from a 3-0 halftime deficit, but allowed a
goal in the final minute for a 4-3 loss. Junior Tiffany Treadwell scored
twice, and sophomore Jessie Brown added the other.
Treadwell scored in the 56th minute off a pass
from junior Katy Newville, who moved into the field for the first time
this season. Sophomore Jessie Brown added another goal in the 71st
minute on an assist from senior Laura Parker. Treadwell tied the game in
the 82nd minute, converting on a turnover.
But, TAMIU’s Erika Alcaraz scored her second goal of the
game with less than a minute left to hand the Drovers the loss. Alcaraz
notched the first goal of the game in the 11th minute. TAMIU
also scored in the 31st and 43rd minutes of play.
Newville collected a save, while allowing a season-high
three goals in the first half. Freshman Jessica Anthony spelled Newville
in the second half, collecting a save and allowing a goal. Injuries also
claimed two Drovers this weekend, as both junior Samantha Pecore (knee)
and Stephanie Ginn (leg) will miss the rest of the season.
In the men’s game, USAO cut a two-goal halftime deficit
to one in the opening minutes of the second half but TAMIU put the game
away with two more goals in the final 30 minutes. Sophomore Tom Hubbard
scored the Drovers’ goal in the 52nd minute on a corner kick
by sophomore Adam Day.
Junior goalkeeper Elliott Ballmann finished with three
saves, but allowed a season-high four goals in the loss. Freshman Jonathan
Oman collected USAO’s only yellow card in the physical game.
