Finishing off the week like they
started, the USAO soccer teams took another doubleheader Saturday. This
time, it was a sweep of Texas Wesleyan in the final day of the 2004 USAO
Soccer Classic. Both teams won their matches by the same score, 2-0.
With their win, the Drover women
improve to 7-1-1 overall. The men, meanwhile, move up to 6-2-1 overall.
Both teams also are on identical five-game winning streaks. This week, the
Drover men are on a two-game road trip in Mississippi, taking on William
Carey College on Oct. 1 and Belhaven College on Oct. 2. After a 10-day
break, the USAO women begin conference play Oct. 5 at Northwestern.
In the women’s game Saturday,
senior Laura Parker got the Drovers on the board first in the 36th
minute on an 18-yard shot from the right side. Senior Stephanie Tyree
scored the insurance goal in the 49th minute from the left side
of the box on a drop-off pass from junior Stephanie Ginn.
Junior goalkeeper Katy Newville
collected four saves and didn’t allow a goal for her third shutout of
the season. Texas Wesleyan’s Jennifer Arellano finished with a save and
allowed a goal in the first half, while Holly Rowland gave up a goal in
the second half.
In the men’s match, senior
Nene Coulibally scored in the 11th minute from the left side of
the keeper’s box on a breakaway. Coulibally returned the favor in the 38th
minute when he served a cross pass to sophomore Adam Day for the
Drovers’ second goal of the game.
Junior goalkeeper Elliott
Ballmann stopped both shots he faced in his fourth shutout of the season.
TWU’s Thomas Hansen finished with four saves, but allowed two goals.
In the early games Saturday, the
College of the Southwest women took a 1-0 win over St. Gregory’s. But,
St. Gregory’s got revenge in the men’s match with a 4-2 win over CSW.
