USAO Drops Road Games

BETHANY – The first conference road test of the season wasn’t kind to the University of Science and Arts, as Southern Nazarene defended its home court Thursday night with an 82-75 win over the USAO women and an 81-60 win over the men.

The loss drops the women to 9-5 overall and 2-2 (seventh place) in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The men fall to 2-9 overall and 2-2 (tie for fourth place) in the SAC. Impending bad weather may postpone Saturday’s game against John Brown, which sits a game above the women and a game below the men.

A decision about Saturday’s game, which is scheduled to begin at 6 and 8 p.m., was not known at press time but can be found on the USAO website at www.usao.edu under “Athletics.”

Thursday night, Nikki Yager led the women with 18 points. The Oolagah native leads the nation in field goal percentage, and she improved her season total by hitting 9-of-11 from the field.

With 14 points from Kartesha Rambo and Sha’Donna Stewart, USAO jumped out to an early nine-point lead. A three-minute scoreless streak allowed SNU to tie the game at 19-19 with 11 minutes left in the first half. USAO did take a 42-39 lead into halftime.

Led by 24 points from Khady Ngom and 18 points from Lauran Hart, SNU regained the lead early in the second half and held on throughout.

Lamitra Daggs posted four points and five rebounds but had a game-high eight assists. Stewart added seven assists and nine rebounds.

For the men, Rafeyon Calhoun found Dalane Finley for a three-point play, and USAO took a 13-12 lead with 14:28 left in the first half. USAO only managed 12 points the rest of the half as SNU outscored the Drovers 39-12 on its way to a 50-24 lead in to halftime.

USAO’s starting guards of Thomas Woods, Avery Stevenson and Calhoun combined for 1-for-11 from the field and 0-for-7 from the 3-point line in the first half. Finley finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, and Stevenson scored 18 points in the second half to lead all USAO scorers with 20 points.
