Drovers Win Opener

CHICKASHA – A pair of junior college teammates ushered in a new era of Drover basketball Saturday night as the University of Science and Arts beat Bacone College 62-52 inside USAO Fieldhouse.

Sha’Donna Stewart and Je’antel Haynes led all scorers with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Stewart also posted a game-high 11 rebounds and six steals while Haynes finished with six rebounds. The two guards started their Drover career with a bang after playing two seasons together at Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas.

Stewart scored USAO’s first points as Bacone jumped out to a 7-2 lead. Haynes came off the bench and gave USAO its first lead at 9-7. Bacone held its last lead at 13-11, but USAO went on a 12-0 run led by seven points from Stewart and five points from Haynes as the Drovers started to play with confidence.

An offensive rebound and put-back by senior center Nikki Yager gave USAO its largest lead of the first half at 36-24 with 1:25 left before halftime. The Drovers extended its lead to 17 points early in the second half and cruised to the first win of the season.

Yager posted her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds and added two blocks and two steals in 29 minutes of action. True freshman Charite Lewis looked like a veteran in her first collegiate game with nine points and three rebounds.

The Drovers travel to Muskogee to play Bacone on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m.
