USAO Falls to No. 8 OCU

OKLAHOMA CITY – Twenty-three Drover turnovers and seven 3-pointers from Oklahoma City proved to be too much as the University of Science and Arts failed to bring down the second top-20 opponent in as many tries. No. 8 OCU was able to outlast USAO 77-65 Saturday night at Abe Lemons Arena.

With 22 first-half points from Nikki Yager and Sha’Donna Stewart, the Drovers went into halftime down only 32-31. Both teams hit 12-of-34 from the field in the first half, but OCU connected on four more 3-pointers.

In the second half, OCU turned USAO’s turnovers in to points. OCU got off 11 more shots than the Drovers in the second half but ended up with only one more field goal. The huge difference came at the foul line. USAO was a solid 14-of-19 at the free-throw line in the second half. OCU wasn’t as good but had plenty of chances, hitting 19-of-29 after only having four free throws in the first half.

Yager, the nation’s leader in field goal percentage, finished with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds on 9-of-12 shooting. Stewart stayed on the rampage as well in the second half scoring 18 points with seven rebounds and four assists.

USAO will face its third ranked opponent in its last four games this weekend in Texas. Thursday the team will play Wayland Baptist with a record of 11-8 overall and 2-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Saturday, the Drovers will travel to No. 7 Lubbock Christian, which is now leading the SAC with a 14-3 record overall and a 5-1 league mark.
